Local Foods Update, Winter 2009-10

Winter Farmers' Markets have been growing in popularity over the past few years, and we're lucky to have several in our own back yard. Farmers' markets aren't the only way to eat local this winter, however; read on for some great tips on sourcing local foods in your area.
Here's a list of local farmers' markets in Southern Maine.

Bath: 1st and 3rd Saturdays, 9 am - noon, United Church of Christ
Brunswick: Saturdays, 9 am - 12:30 pm, Fort Andross Mill
Falmouth: Wednesdays, 10 am - 2 pm, Allen Sterling and Lothrop
Portland: Alternating Wednesdays in Monument Square and Saturdays in Deering Oaks Park; beginning Wednesday the 9th, 11 am - 1 pm. (For the lastest info and to pre-order foods, there are 2 e-mail distribution lists:  Sumner Valley Farm & Eat Local All Year (a group of several area farms))
West Cumberland: Fridays, 10 am - 2 pm, Skillin's Greenhouses

New to the scene are several winter CSAs, highlighted in a recent Press Herald article, and here's a comprehensive list from MOFGA.

There's the possiblity of a Seafood CSA in Freeport, through Midcoast Fishermen's Cooperative and Royal River Natural Foods, if there's enough interest. Contact Tina at Royal River for more information.
