Advertising Criteria
It is our goal that all products and services advertised in the SunriseGuide have significantly reduced environmental impacts compared to their competitors or alternatives. The SunriseGuide puts this philosophy into specific guidelines. All products and services advertised in the SunriseGuide meet at least one of the following three criteria.

  1. Independent third-party certification
Reliable third-party certifications are accepted, such as USDA Organic, Fair Trade, the Forest Stewardship Council, Green Seal and ENERGY STAR.
  2. First-party certification
Used only for products where specific, well-defined environmental claims are made, the claim must address specific content percentages or totals, and the level or environmental claim must be at the highest, readily-available level, such as 30% post consumer recycled content paper.
  3. “Overwhelming substitution advantage”
Used on a case-by-case basis for products and services that have an “overwhelming substitution advantage” over the average competitive product or service in terms of environmental impact, such as locally-grown produce.

All coupons and advertising appearing in this publication were solicited in accordance with the Celilo Coupon and Advertising Criteria, licensed to the SunriseGuide by Celilo Group Media. This product-based criteria was developed by Celilo Group Media in cooperation with the Sustainable Development Commission of the City of Portland and Multnomah County, Oregon, and it is updated annually by Celilo Group Media. The application of the criteria to this publication was not audited or reviewed by Celilo Group Media, and Celilo Group Media bears no responsibility for any claims made in the SunriseGuide. This is perhaps the most comprehensive and the most practical product-based criteria developed in the US.
